Progressives are screaming at some of the other blogs I have been to. If the Pres does cut medicare or SS, he can kiss his second term goodbye...and a primary challenge would not be out of the question.

So a progressive would vote for Michelle Bachmann or Romney over this? Nope. That's just angry talk from the lefty partisans, it's not gonna happen. No more likely than a Tea Party fan voting for Obama if Huntsman got the primary nod.

The progressives will stay home and not vote at all. I am seeing an awful lot of this sentiment. Don't think for one moment that the progressive left won't take their ball and go home to prove a point.

First of all, no one knows the details, so why do we need to start criticizing?
Secondly, there is an update to this HP story. If you want criticism, check it out.
Me...I will wait and see what is on the table. If it's means testing or removal of, or raising the cap on income subject to SS tax, then that would be fine with me.
If it is aggressively going after medicaid/medicare waste and fraud, ditto. I'm for it. If it is bargaining for lower drug prices,,,that works too. There are many ways to cut these programs without cutting benefits, n'est-ce pas?

It also may be a smart maneuver to show how absolutely rigid the republicans are if a deal cannot be struck.

No we won't. He's really pissing me off, but I'm going to shack up with my kid in FL to do a more effective GOTV. The alternatives are just too frightening.

The fact that S/S has its own revenue stream and a trust is not at all good reason to pretend it has no impact on policy or the budget process. After all S/S is fine for now but faces shortages later. Well reducing S/S spending before then puts off the crisis of inadequate funds. Those decisions get negotiated this year. This very week in fact.

Your Kabuki theater theory is one way to interpret events. But it is far from the only view, and may not even be the most likely to be accurate. A separate trust fund does not make for total separation of issues. Not in DC anyway.

By Kabuki theater do you actually mean to imply the GOP and the Dems are conspiring to bring all this about?

BINGO!!!! You win.

There is just too much direct and circumstantial evidence that lead to no other rational conclusion.

re: #8 Rightwingconspirator

REGARDING: The fact that S/S has its own revenue stream and a trust is not at all good reason to pretend it has no impact on policy or the budget process.
RESPONSE: First, there is no "pretense".
If SS were ended, today, the effect upon the federal budget deficit would be ZERO.
Is that a sufficient characterization of the relationship???

REGARDING: After all S/S is fine for now but faces shortages later. Well reducing S/S spending before then puts off the crisis of inadequate funds. Those decisions get negotiated this year. This very week in fact.
RESPONSE: There is no question that the SS trust fund is inadequate and has been since its inception in 1935. This inadequacy must be addressed, at some point in time, and, the sooner the better, but not BECAUSE of the federal budget deficit.
I.e., it is a "stand-alone" problem.

REGARDING: Your Kabuki theater theory is one way to interpret events. But it is far from the only view, and may not even be the most likely to be accurate.
RESPONSE: My "Kabuki theater" commentary is not "theory", i.e., it is based upon empirical evidence.
Hmmmm.... please point out the parts of my commentary which appear to be inaccurate.
It is intellectually dishonest to posit something without offering a modicum of rational reasoning.

REGARDING: A separate trust fund does not make for total separation of issues. Not in DC anyway.
RESPONSE: What does that even mean??? lol
Daniel, I find it absolutely amazing and shocking that you continually fail to understand the concept and reality of the SS Trust fund as being distinct from ALL other federal operations.

You will have to do better than that to prove a conspiracy of that scope. Extraordinary accusations require extraordinary evidence. Or as Mr Christopher Hitchens put it-A theory presented without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.
